Belvoir Castle
Christmas songs and carols for Belvoir Castle
On Sunday 13th December 2009, a bleak, cold day that threatened and delivered rain, about 60 members of the Mansfield Choral Society (together with David Wilson and Stephen Hunt, our accompanist) took the trail by bus and car to Belvoir Castle. There, we were to sing our carols in the Ballroom to the admiring throng.
Well, nearly. When we arrived, we found that the piano had disappeared from the ballroom into the grand Dining Room for a later ‘Dine with a Diva’ concert – we were now to sing on the 40-acre Landing. This was relayed to us by a friendly, if slightly emotional Welsh lady, our steward for the day, as we crowded into the ‘dungeon’ that was our changing room.
Before and after our ‘spots’, we wandered through the mock-Gothic passages and halls, together with the crowds of visitors. And the other choirs, groups and bands – school girls from Leicester and a choral society from Stamford which sang from the same landing; a local recorder group marooned on another nearby landing, battered from all sides by far louder choirs; a folk band playing I’m not sure what in a reception room; two small singing groups in the Ballroom harmonising gently.
All very pleasant. Then it was our turn – two sessions we had – to sing the carols from the concert. We filled the landing and launched into our repertoire. By all accounts we sang well – unbiased spectators thought we were excellent, praising the choice of carols and the sound. To be honest, we were better off singing from the landing as we overlooked the entrance hall and the sound carried up to the next floor.
Of course, there were difficulties – we could hardly see the music in the gloom, David beat time and entries from memory and Stephen played in the odd flashes of light, occasionally busking when darkness fell around him.
But it was fun – a new experience, a new public to impress and a chance to sing the carols again.
Then home, tired but satisfied. Our thanks to Jean for organising the trip, to David and to Stephen – and to ourselves.
